The Heart Behind Iris House Cork

about us

How it all started

InĀ February 2011, Ann Dowling Spillane, during her own cancer journey, foundedĀ The Girls Club, later known asĀ Iris House Cork, inspired by the need for support, shared advice, and a shoulder to lean on. Built on positivity and encouragement, the group quickly became a vital space for those affected by cancer, their families, and friends to come together.

Throughout 2011, they gathered at the Ambassador Hotel in Cork City, hosting workshops, events, and fundraisers. Ann continued her brave battle with cancer, but sadly, onĀ October 13th, 2017, Ann gained her angel wings, leaving behind a lasting legacy. Her vision of community and hope lives on in Iris House, touching countless lives and reminding us all that we are never alone.

From The Girls Club Cork to Iris House

In July 2017 our name changed from ā€œThe Girls Club Corkā€ to ā€œCork Cancer Care Centreā€ and then in August 2024 the name was changed to ā€œIris Houseā€.

Iris House is located at 26 St. Paul’s Avenue, Cork. This wonderful premises is our official meeting point and ā€˜home away from home’ where we provide vital support to all those touched by Cancer, their families including free counselling as well as offering a range of complimentary therapies (such as Reiki, Shamanic , Acupuncture, Indian Head Massage, Meditation, Yoga,Ā  oncology massage, Lymphatic Drainage) and a drop-in centre during the day.

Cork Cancer Care Centre

Linda Goggin James CEO

When Ann’s health began to decline in 2016, Linda Goggin James stepped forward with unwavering dedication to support the heart of Iris House. As the centre’s operations grew, Linda took on the responsibility of managing day-to-day activities — from coordinating with counsellors and holistic therapists, to overseeing grants, training, and organizing vital fundraising events.

After Ann’s untimely passing inĀ October 2017, Linda stepped into the role of General Manager, carrying forward Ann’s legacy with compassion and resilience. During a challenging time, Linda guided the centre as it continued to grow and evolve, expanding its services to include holistic therapies, support groups likeĀ Connect and Flourish, retreats, and art therapy — all designed to nurture the mind, body, and spirit of those affected by cancer. InĀ 2021, the directors of Iris House recognized Linda’s dedication and vision, promoting her toĀ CEO. Since then, Linda and her incredible team have continued to offer comfort, care, and a safe space for everyone on their cancer journey.

Iris House continues to inspire, knowing that the work they do, together, is changing lives, one moment of care at a time.
